The world is living amid a mental health crisis, with rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide skyrocketing in 2020. Mental illness can impact anyone, at any time, and does not discriminate. The average life expectancy has dropped dramatically since 2014 due to ‘diseases of despair’; in other words, the impact of increased hopelessness and depression, suicide/suicidal thoughts, and alcohol/drug-related diseases. So why is no one talking about it?
Over the past decade alone, the world has grieved the loss of music icons from around the world due to drugs or suicide, driven by battles with mental illness. For many, talking about mental health has been historically viewed as ‘taboo’, so we put on a brave face and handle it; but what if we normalize it? What if we talk about it? What if we provide tangible support through community-driven initiatives to meet those struggling where they’re at to let them know that they are not alone and it is perfectly ok to not be ok.
For centuries, music has served as a comfort and therapeutic coping mechanism for millions. The power of sound and functional music has a profound impact on the brain, mental health, and overall wellbeing. Eager to cultivate tangible resources for a community in need, Arigami, Silentmode, Beatport, and the Association for Electronic Music (AFEM) joined together with the electronic music industry’s top talent and mental health professionals to curate the Music Connects Us report
